We’re pleased to announce the release of UTAM’s latest Annual Report, which details the 2017 performance of the investments we manage on behalf of the University of Toronto. The report also provides updates on our various achievements during the past year, along with thorough explanations of how we manage the financial assets of one of the world’s leading universities.

UTAM’s role is not simply to make investments and monitor returns. We’re constantly refining our processes and systems – and developing the expertise of our team – to deliver sustainable value to the university and its diverse stakeholders. This year’s annual report, titled “Behind the Numbers,” provides additional insight into the rigour, discipline, professionalism and personal commitment that underpin our annual performance figures.

Results for 2017 were once again strong in terms of both absolute and relative performance, with the Pension and the Endowment portfolios each returning 12.4% (net of all fees and expenses). This exceeded the university’s target return by 6.6% and outperformed the Reference Portfolio – which establishes the benchmark return – by 1.0% in Pension and 0.9% in Endowment.

“It was a year of continued strong performance across our investment portfolios,” says Daren Smith, UTAM’s President and Chief Investment Officer. “Guided by the strategic insights of the University of Toronto’s Investment Committee and the overall vision of the university, we’re confident that UTAM will continue to meet the high expectations of our stakeholders – not only in the results we generate from year to year, but in the longer-term value creation that’s taking shape behind the numbers.”
