Benefits Canada, a magazine for pension, benefits and investment executives, recently interviewed Daren Smith, UTAM’s President and Chief Investment Officer, for an article about his team’s approach to responsible investing. The article, titled “UTAM looks under the hood at investment managers’ ESG approaches,” appears in the Trailblazers column of Benefits Canada’s September edition. It was written by Yaelle Gang, the editor of the magazine’s companion publication, Canadian Investment Review.
After a brief introduction to UTAM, the article describes elements of how we integrate environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors into our investment decision-making. Daren highlights the challenge of determining what external managers are actually doing, noting that “there’s a lot of marketing spin on responsible investing.”
Daren goes on to share UTAM’s solutions for overcoming this challenge for different asset classes, as well as his advice for small and mid-sized plan sponsors that invest through funds.
