Senior Leadership Team
UTAM’s senior leadership team, led by President and Chief Investment Officer Chuck O’Reilly, is composed of highly qualified and dedicated professionals.
Our mandate is to prudently invest the capital entrusted to us by the University of Toronto, and we believe that we have the right people in place to achieve this mandate and continue to deliver value to the University. UTAM is organized into three functional areas – Investments, Risk and Research, and Operations – led by members of the senior leadership team.
President and Chief Investment Officer
Chuck joined UTAM in 2011, progressing to Senior Portfolio Manager and Head of Public Equities in 2017 and ultimately, in July 2021, to President and Chief Investment Officer.
Prior to joining UTAM, Chuck spent more than 10 years at Ontario Power Generation, where he was the Director of the Fund Management group responsible for the investment of the company’s pension and nuclear funds.
Chuck graduated from Queen’s University with an honours undergraduate degree in Commerce (B.Comm. Hons). He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) designations.
Investments
Leon joined UTAM in 2012 and has more than 10 years of investment experience. He plays a key role in UTAM’s investment activities, overseeing all fixed income investment portfolios (including private credit). Within these portfolios, Leon leads portfolio construction, investment strategy and monitoring.
Prior to joining UTAM, Leon spent nearly four years with HSBC Bank Canada in the risk department, where he was a manager responsible for risk analysis and monitoring for market and traded credit risk.
Leon has a Master’s degree in Mathematical Finance (M.Sc.) from the University of British Columbia and an undergraduate degree in Mathematics (B.Sc.) from Peking University. He also holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) designations.
Jean joined UTAM in 2018 and has more than 20 years of investment experience. He plays a key role in UTAM’s investment activities, overseeing all private markets investment portfolios (except private credit). Within these portfolios, Jean leads portfolio construction, investment strategy and monitoring.
Before joining UTAM, Jean was a Managing Director at Further Capital, leading manager origination and diligence activities. He was also a partner and senior investment professional at Caledon Capital Management Inc., a business he co-founded and helped build into a successful private markets investment firm. Earlier in his career, Jean worked with institutional investors on private markets investing initiatives and as a professional with TD Capital, Merrill Lynch, and Deloitte.
Jean holds an honours undergraduate degree in Commerce (B.Comm. Hons) from the University of Manitoba’s Asper School of Business, where he received the Finance Gold Medal.
Risk and Research
Doug joined UTAM in 2017. He is responsible for asset allocation modelling, risk management and measurement, research, and performance analysis. Doug chairs UTAM’s Investment Risk Committee. He is a member of the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) Asset Owner Technical Advisory Committee.
Previously, Doug worked for 15 years at OPTrust, where his responsibilities included developing strategic asset allocation models, researching risk factors, completing internal and external investment strategy evaluations, implementing performance and ALM systems, and developing a set of quantitative tools to inform investment decisions.
Doug holds a PhD in Finance from the EDHEC Business School, a Master’s degree in Science with a specialization in Finance (M.Sc.) from the University of Reading, a Master’s degree in Statistics (M.Sc.) from the University of Toronto, and an honours undergraduate degree in Mathematics and its Applications (B.Sc. Hons) from the University of Toronto. Doug holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Professional Risk Manager (PRM) and Certificate in Quantitative Finance (CQF) designations.
Ivan joined UTAM in 2010. He plays a key role in UTAM’s activities in the following areas: risk management and measurement, performance, research and investment data infrastructure.
Before joining UTAM, Ivan was the Vice President of IT Applications Development at Northwater Capital Management Inc., responsible for developing the firm’s in-house portfolio management, accounting and reporting systems.
Ivan has an undergraduate degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (B.Sc.) from the University of Hong Kong and a Master of Finance (M.Fin.) degree from Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto. Ivan holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Financial Risk Manager (FRM) designations.
Operations
Zohair joined UTAM in 2018. He is responsible for UTAM’s operational due diligence program and oversight of investment operations activities and supports the Chief Operating Officer in managing technology.
Before joining UTAM, Zohair was a Controller for Timelo Investment Management. He worked for more than six years in the operations group at DGAM and then The Carlyle Group, where he was promoted to Manager of Finance and Accounting. While at The Carlyle Group/DGAM, Zohair was responsible for fund and corporate accounting, organizing due diligence meetings, completing regulatory filings, and managing relationships with fund administrators and auditors.
Zohair has an honours undergraduate degree in Commerce (B.Comm. Hons) from McMaster University. He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) and Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designations.
Lisa joined UTAM in 2010 and was appointed Chief Operating Officer in 2016. She is responsible for corporate operations, including finance, human resources, enterprise risk, information technology and compliance, as well as investment operations and operational due diligence reviews of managers and service providers.
She is an active member of the Portfolio Management Association of Canada (PMAC) and a past director of the Responsible Investment Association (RIA), having also served as its Secretary, Treasurer, and chair of its Governance & Policy and Finance & Audit committees.
Lisa has over 20 years of experience in regulatory compliance, having previously provided compliance consulting and project management services to institutional investment advisory and portfolio management firms. Lisa has also held financial accounting, insolvency, and audit positions in Canada and the UK.
Lisa holds an honours undergraduate degree in Accounting (B.A. Hons) from the University of Kent. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.
